... the result of an imbalance of power and control. It often begins with psychological, emotional and verbal abuse. It can escalate to abuse of property and pets as well as sexual and physical abuse. Behind closed doors in Ontario, a crime is being committed. One woman in ten is being slapped, punched, pushed, kicked, bitten or threatened by her husband or partner. This is called wife assault. It's happening in rich and poor families, and families from every cultural and educational background. Because wife assault usually happens at home, people tend to think of it as a family matter.
Assault is a crime, whether it happens on the street or in the home. As a community, we should all be concerned.

Hiatus House was established in 1976 and provides comprehensive services within the Essex County communities to enhance the physical safety of women and children and to empower women, their partners and children to live violence-free. Hiatus House operates a 42-bed facility providing emergency shelter, food and counseling services to victims of domestic violence. In addition, Hiatus House provides long term counseling to women, children witnesses of domestic violence, and male batterers.

Windsor Police Services - Special Services Branch was established to better address the issues of family violence. It includes a family violence coordinator and several detective
Sergeants, all dedicated to ending the cycle of violence within the family unit, encompassing both physical and sexual abuse. Their goal is to empower all victims and assist them in regaining control of their
lives.

Legal Assistance of Windsor, a joint project of the Ontario Legal Aid Plan and the Faculty of Law of the University of Windsor, is a community legal clinic offering free legal advice and representation and social work services. Legal Assistance of Windsor is staffed by lawyers and social workers as well as law students and social work students from the University of Windsor.

Sexual Assault Treatment Centre opened in 1991 in order to offer sensitive, compassionate and experienced care to survivors of sexual assault. In 1993, the Centre expanded to include survivors of Child Sexual Abuse. There are two physicians associated with the program who see children on a booked basis and provide a medical evaluation of the child. The Centre works closely with both Children's Aid Societies. On September 22, 1997, the Centre was chosen as one of six pilot sites to help women survivors of domestic abuse.
